NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane swimming & diving team will travel to Mansfield, Texas, on Friday, Nov. 4, to face off against American Athletic Conference foe SMU in a dual meet, starting at 11 a.m. CT.Â
"SMU won the AAC Championship last season and we finished in second place, so this is a good match-up and the beginning of a great rivalry," head coach Katie Robinson said. "I was excited to have SMU in our schedule this season because I think when you swim against the best, it brings out the best."
Tulane is back in action for the first time since the Dual-A-Pool-Ooza at Rice University, Oct. 14-15, where the team recorded eight first place finishes. Seniors Joy Jason and Ellie Sills earned first place finishes in the 200 breast and 200 fly, respectively, to lead the Green Wave.Â
Despite the long break between meets, Robinson was impressed by the team's practices and expects strong performances across the board at SMU.
"We've had some great practices and we've focused on what we learned from the last meet," Robinson said. "We've emphasized the strategy of how to compete in races, while still getting stronger in the weight room and pool. What the women have learned and worked through in those practices will give them confidence when they step up behind the block Friday."
Last season, the Green Wave swam competitively against SMU, but dropped the meet by a close margin of 153-146. The competition was highlighted by sophomore Shelly Zelnick's performance, as she earned a pair of first-place finishes in the 100 back (57.03) and the 200 IM (2:06.55).Â
"SMU has a strong team and we have a strong team, so the meet is really going to test us," Robinson said. "We're going to get as many individual wins as possible, and then back that up with as many second, third, fourth and fifth place finishes as we can. Our program is at a level where we have to step up and perform against very challenging teams."
