NEW ORLEANS – Tulane women's basketball fans got their first look at the 2016-17 squad on Tuesday night inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, as the Green Wave earned a 75-53 exhibition victory over Freret Street neighbor Loyola New Orleans. Senior guard Courtnie Latham led the way with 18 points on 7-of-14 shooting while junior guard Kolby Morgan notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"We played a lot of players tonight, trying to rotate them through. We shot o.k. in the first half but forced quite a few in the second half," Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton stated. "We have so much youth in the post, so it was great experience for them tonight. We are a week away from playing a top-10 team, so the thing we have to take from this is that we have some work to do and expect to guard the paint a little better."
Tulane pounced on Loyola in the early goings, producing a 16-0 run that eventually extended into a 29-4 run and a 33-11 lead midway through the second quarter. The Green Wave shot 42.9 percent in the first half, recording 10 assists along the way, and outrebounded the Wolf Pack 31-19 at the midway point as well. Furthermore, Latham had 12 of her 18 points just 20 minutes in.
The Olive and Blue built a 32-point lead (67-35), its largest of the game, just a few minutes into the final quarter before settling into the final tally of 75-53. Ultimately, the Green Wave shot 35.4 percent compared to Loyola's 32.7 percent.
Lastly, senior Shakira Harding rounded out the double-digit scoring with 12 points while fellow senior Leslie Vorpahl flirted with a triple-double with seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists.
Up next, the Green Wave will officially make its season debut when they host Grambling State on Saturday, Nov. 12, at 2 p.m., back inside Fogelman in Devlin.
