METAIRIE, La. – Tulane cross country had a strong outing in the team's second meet of the year on Saturday morning at the second annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Cross Country Festival, hosted by the Loyola Wolfpack at Lafreniere Park. The first-place finish by the women's team and the second-place effort by the men mark the highest Tulane has finished since the South Alabama Cross Country Opener in Mobile last September.
On the women's side…
Redshirt freshman Mckenzie Melius took the top spot in her first collegiate cross country meet, becoming one of eight Tulane women to set personal bests at the race. Melius paced the Green Wave with a time of 17:31.0, nearly eight seconds faster than the second-place runner and ten seconds ahead of junior teammate Jennifer LaMori in third place. Freshmen Mary Catherine Stovall and Aislinn Roberts as well as redshirt senior Jessica Adamson would also finish in the top-10 overall, leading the Tulane women to a first-place team finish in the second meet of the year.
"For Mckenzie [Melius] to start her cross country with a victory is a great step forward for her development as well as for our team. We made some progress today across the board and we're looking forward to putting our complete team together next weekend at LSU."
--Associate head cross country coach Michael Nussa
On the men's side…
Sophomore Emmanuel Rotich once again led the Green Wave men's squad, finishing seven seconds ahead of junior teammate and runner-up Moses Aloiloi to claim his first title of the season just a week after being named American Conference Runner of the Week. Sophomore Joshua Cheruyot placed fourth, his highest collegiate finish, followed by junior Charlie Frishberg and sophomore Pierce Hill at the no. 17 and no. 32 spots, respectively, to round out the second-place team effort for the Tulane men.
"It was great to see Emmanuel [Rotich] and Moses [Aloiloi] take the top two spots while running a very controlled race today. I expected the result we got from them and was pleased to see some improvement from Joshua [Cheruyot] and Charlie [Frishberg]."
--Director of track and field and cross country Eric Peterson
Up Next…
The Green Wave will take a ride up I-10 next Saturday to compete in the LSU Cross Country Invitational at Highland Road Park in Baton Rouge. The women will run at 8:05 a.m., followed by the men at 9:15 a.m.
