NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Coming off a season with three top-five finishes in the spring and missing out on the NCAA Championships by a single stroke, Tulane women's golf enters 2016-17 with a lot of optimism as Green Wave open its fall slate at the Mason Rudolph Championship being held this weekend on the Legends Club's North Course in Nashville, Tenn.
Â
Fourth-year head coach Lorne Don has a talented, but young, squad ready to battle an impressive field that includes six top 50 programs (Alabama, Houston, Northwestern, SMU, Vanderbilt and Virginia) from a year ago. The Commodores are serving as host for this three-day, 54-hole event.
Â
Tulane comes into its season opener with a roster that features one senior, three sophomores and four freshmen. Don is relying on his youth early as three freshman anchor the Green Wave's lineup for the Mason Rudolph. Freshman Gabrielle Correia starts her collegiate career playing at No. 1 with sophomore Laura Munoz at No. 2, freshman Haydyn Gibson at No. 3, senior Belen Goicoechea at No. 4 and redshirt freshman Elise Genoux at No. 5.
Â
"The cool thing about coaching golf is there is a good way to measure how our players are doing," said Don. "We went out and played four qualifying rounds and the low five are getting to go to this first tournament."
Â
The Mason Rudolph Championship is the first of four fall tournaments for Tulane. The Green Wave played in this event last year and also return to the Windy City Classic (Oct. 3-4) and Alamo Invitational (Oct. 23-25) later this fall. along with competing in the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational hosted by Texas (Oct. 17-18).
Â
Going into this first tournament, Don said he is pleased with the team's progress so far and look for his young group to make waves early.
Â
"In our first two weeks of practice, we've really been focusing on getting better each day," said Don. "Obviously, with a young team coming back from the summer, you just want to see improvement. I think we've done that. Our first two tournaments we are going against strong fields, which is what we like to do here. We like to play against the best teams and the best players in the country."
