Schmitz & Schick highlight the weekend
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Sunday marked the final day of competition for the Tulane men's tennis team at the Crimson Tide Four-In-The-Fall. The Green Wave utilized all nine of its competitors over the three-day event, wrapping up the Alabama tournament by clashing with American Athletic Conference foe Memphis in singles and doubles action.
"This was a great way to start off our individual season," Tulane head coach Mark Booras stated. "The level of competition was as good as it gets and the hospitality by Alabama and Coach Husack made it a special tournament. We did well across the board. Saw lots of good things out of all our guys."
One day after usurping No. 34 Mazen Osama of Alabama in three sets, No. 66 Constantin Schmitz delivered in singles once again, knocking off No. 52 Andrew Watson of Memphis, 6-1, 6-2. Overall on the weekend, Schmitz finished 2-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles play.
Not to be outdone was sophomore Tyler Schick, who cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Columbia's Jack Turchetta. As a result, Schick finished with the best combined record for the Green Wave on the weekend with a 4-2 record.
Senior Chi-Shan Jao also earned a singles win on the day, besting Memphis' Jan Palleres, 6-2, 6-3. Two Tulane freshman also got in the winners column for the day as Tim Ruetzel defeated Shakeel Manji, 6-3, 7-5, while Jonathan Star bested Matt Story, 6-1, 6-1.
Connie came out with two great wins in singles to start off the year, which should give him some confidence going into the All-America National Championships next week," Booras added. "We were very pleased with how all the freshmen performed as well. There's a lot of ability in this group. I think it's going to be a very exciting season."
