Schmitz & Erlenbusch knock off ranked singles foes

BERKELEY, Calif. – The (RV) Tulane men's tennis team (3-1) fell behind 3-0 before cutting the deficit to 3-2 against No. 4 California (2-0), but it was the Bears who pushed ahead and claimed the 4-2 victory to advance to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships. No. 54 Constantin Schmitz and Luis Erlenbusch highlighted the Green Wave effort today as they both picked up ranked singles victories.
"Our guys fought hard today against a very solid Cal team," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "Very impressed by their focus while we were coming up on their heels. Peter Wright has done a consistently fantastic job with their program and his team was very disciplined and composed throughout the day. After we stopped looking around wondering how good these guys were, we actually had a path in front of us to come away with four points in singles. Unfortunately, we gave them a nice head start and when you're in a spring against a thoroughbred, every step counts."
No. 4 Cal jumped on the Green Wave early by claiming the doubles point with victories on courts one and two before dispatching five top-100 ranked competitors to fill out its singles lineup. Next, the Bears pushed its lead to 3-0 with straight-set wins on courts two and four.
Yet, the Olive and Blue continued to fight, as No. 54 Schmitz knocked off No. 12 Florian Lakat, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, on court one. Then, Erlenbusch recorded his best win in his young career by upsetting No. 82 Bjorn Hoffman, 6-4, 7-6(6), on court five.
Tulane seemed poised for the comeback with freshman Tim Ruetzel battling into a third set on court six, but California earned the clincher over on court three, as No. 69 Filip Bergevi defeated Sebastian Rey, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
"We're going to come up against teams like this in the future and need to be ready to sprint from the first point," Booras added.
Up next, the Green Wave welcome Santa Clara to New Orleans on Sunday, Feb. 5, with a Noon CT start time.
