NEW ORLEANS – The (RV) Tulane men's tennis team (4-1) continued its strong start to the season on Sunday when they handed Santa Clara (4-1) its first loss of the season in emphatic fashion with a 7-0 sweep. The Green Wave improved to 3-1 in doubles while five of its six singles players recorded straight-set wins.
"Great complete effort by our guys today," Tulane head coach Mark Booras said. "That's the one thing we preached before the match today. Everybody had the responsibility to play a complete match, whether it was doubles or singles. I was very impressed with the way our guys kept their heads. Santa Clara is a very strong team that just had a huge win against a SEC team last week, and we knew that they were very capable of beating us. The guys stepped up to the challenge and showed a lot of maturity. Hopefully, we'll be able to keep this going and use this win as a confidence builder heading into our next match."
The reigning American Athletic Conference Player of the Week No. 54 Constantin Schmitz, along with freshman Luis Erlenbusch, each won their fourth straight dual match on Sunday with victories on courts one and five, respectively.
In doubles, the pairing of Ewan Moore and Erlenbusch earned their first win together with a 6-3 decision on court two. Meanwhile, the tandem of Chi-Shan Jao and Sebastian Rey improved to 3-1 at the No. 1 spot after a 6-4 victory.
Up next, Tulane tackles its first SEC opponent of the season when Auburn rolls into town on Friday, Feb. 10, for a 1 p.m. match-up. The Wave then host North Florida on Sunday, Feb. 12, at Noon.
