NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball embarks on its second American Athletic Conference road trip of the season, heading to ECU and Cincinnati in hopes of ending a three-match losing streak. The Green Wave (12-6 overall, 1-4 The American) plays ECU (12-6 overall, 4-2 The American), 7 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13, before making their way to Cincinnati (6-12 overall, 4-2 The American) for a 1 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 15 showdown.
"We had a match canceled on Sunday, so we were able to get another day of rest and another day of training," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We haven't really trained hard in a couple of weeks because of some injuries, but we've trained hard this week, and we're getting our team back to having an aggressive mindset. I think we're really looking good going into this match against a very good ECU team. We'll certainly have to display some toughness and aggressiveness to beat them."
Last weekend, Tulane could not take down current No. 22 Wichita State at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, falling short in the upset bid, 3-0. Freshman middle hitter Markenzie Benoit finished with eight kills (.333 attack percentage), freshman right side hitter Kristen Thompson recorded a team-high 10 kills and senior setter Justine Bowers totaled a season-high 31 assists. The Green Wave's Sunday match against Memphis was canceled because of weather related to Tropical Storm Nate, as Tulane went winless for the second consecutive weekend.
"It certainly affects any team when you go through a couple losses, especially back-to-back losses when you're young," Barnes said. "They start questioning if they're good enough, but they need to understand that, at this level, you overcome struggles by being aggressive, not by being tentative. I think that the team has learned a lot through it, and I've seen that aggressive edge back this week, so hopefully we can verify it with some wins."
Last season, the Green Wave split the series with ECU, losing at home, 3-1, before winning in Greenville, NC, 3-1. Tulane lost both its matches against Cincinnati last year.
