VENICE, Fla. – Four former Tulane women's golfers embark on the next step in trying to secure an LPGA Tour card this weekend, competing Oct. 19-22 in Stage II of LPGA Qualifying School at the Plantation Golf and Country Club.
Lili Alvarez (2002-05), Gemma Dryburgh (2011-15), Emily Penttilä (2012-16) and Samantha Troyanovich (2008-12) are among the field of 190 qualifiers set to tee off on the Bobcat and Panther courses for 72-hole stroke play competition. The first round gets underway Thursday morning with 18 holes each day through Sunday.Â
Alvarez, Dryburgh and Penttilä automatically qualified for Stage II as top 150 players on the Symetra Tour, while Troyanovich advanced after finishing in the top 90 in Stage I in August. Alvarez, a nine-year veteran of the Symetra Tour who also appeared on The Golf Channel's "Big Break" series in 2010, talked about preparing for the four grueling days on the links.
"I'm trying really hard to get my swing grooved into the positions that I want to have it," Alvarez said. "I'm also trying to balance out the amount of work that I am doing on the course with the amount of concentration I am going to need outside the course. It's going to be hot, it's four days and it's a lot of pressure. So I'm really trying to stay positive and happy and come with the best attitude and the best technique I can possibly have."
Alvarez said that dealing with the pressure of trying to earn an LPGAÂ tour card will be helped greatly by knowing she and three other former Green Wave players will be out there competing at the same time.
"It's unbelievable," Alvarez added. "It just speaks volumes about the program and what you can achieve when you are (at Tulane). The program is really good and the fact that four of us are at the second stage, not a lot of colleges can say that. It's very competitive but I'm pretty sure the four of us will make it (to the next stage)."
The top 80 finishers, including ties, from Stage II move on to the final Stage III scheduled for Nov. 29-Dec. 3 at LPGAÂ International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
