NEW ORLEANS – Tulane volleyball will look to get back to its winning ways, 7 p.m., Friday, at Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, when it hosts American Athletic Conference newcomer and nationally-ranked (No. 24) Wichita State. The Green Wave's Sunday afternoon match against Memphis is postponed due to impending weather conditions related to Tropical Storm Nate.
"Our mindset is on Wichita State, so the postponement doesn't affect our approach or getting ready for this opportunity to play a ranked opponent and the best team in The American," head coach Jim Barnes said. "We're getting some people back healthy, and this week we feel like we've been able to train really hard in a way we haven't been able to do the past couple weeks. We're trying to get back to 100 percent, and this week is critical that we get back our edge, especially defensively. Wichita State's the best team in our league, so we've got a huge challenge on Friday."
Last weekend, Tulane (12-5 overall, 1-3 The American record) struggled, falling 3-1 against Temple and UConn, Friday, Sept. 29, and Sunday, Oct. 1, respectively. On its homecourt at Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse, the Green Wave, who now sit tied for eighth place in The American, failed to find its rhythm offensively and could not slow its opponents defensively. Tulane recorded an overall attack percentage of just .092 on the weekend, tallying a .080 percentage against Temple, while posting a percentage of .103 in its loss to UConn.
"You can't think too far ahead in this conference," Barnes said. "For our young team, it's day to day. We're trying to continue to grow as a very young team, and, as coaches, we're trying to put them in positions where they can be a little more successful."
Tulane leads the all-time series against Wichita State, 1-0. The Green Wave last played Wichita State, Sept. 19, 1986, defeating the Shockers, 3-1. Tulane last played a ranked opponent on Sept. 19, 2014, falling against No. 20 Arizona (3-0). The Wave's last victory against a ranked opponent came, Sept. 21, 2008, when they defeated No. 14 Middle Tennessee State (3-2).
