NEW ORLEANS – After two weeks without a meet, the Tulane women's swimming & diving team is back in action this weekend at the Phill Hansel Invitational in Houston.
The meet will bring together 10 highly competitive teams from the Mountain and Central time zones and give the Green Wave a chance to see American Athletic Conference foe Houston.
Besides the host Cougars, Tulane will also compete against Air Force, Colorado State, Idaho, New Mexico, North Texas, Northern Colorado, Rice and Vanderbilt. This will be Tulane's second time this season facing off against Rice as the teams competed in a dual at the Reily Center Natatorium in late October.
The Phill Hansel Invitaitonal is a three-day meet beginning on Thursday and concluding Saturday held at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center Natatorium. Each day, preliminary races will begin at 10 a.m. with diving prelims taking place at noon. Thursday's and Friday's finals will be held at 6 p.m. while Saturday's finals will commence at 5 p.m.
On Thursday, teams will compete in the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free and 400 medley relay.
Friday's events will be the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 800 free relay.
On Saturday, teams will square off in the 1650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly and 400 free relay.
Divers will compete in the 1-meter springboard, 3-meter springboard and platform diving events.
Tulane last competed on October 27-28 at home, hosting Denver, FIU and Rice in its Dual-a-Pool-Ooza. The Green Wave picked up a victory against FIU while falling to Denver and Rice. But in the process of those three dual meets, Tulane set eight new top-10 times in school history including Olivia Johnson's top overall 1000 free time of 10:02.05.
The Phil Hansell Invitational is named in honor of former Houston coach Phill Hansel. Hansel took the Cougars to ten Top 20 finishes at national championship meets during his time as Houston's coach from 1975-96.
This weekend's meet will be Tulane's final meet of the fall semester. The Green Wave will be back in the pool competitively on January 19 as they host Loyola-New Orleans for Senior Day.
