NEW ORLEANS -- Just days removed from a win against Houston in football, Tulane volleyball will try its hand at beating the Cougars. The Green Wave are set to play at Houston, 1 p.m., Wednesday, before returning to Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse to host Houston, 1 p.m., Friday, in the final match of the season.Â
"It's not ordinary to play a team back-to-back like we're about to do, so it's critical we come out and set the tone on the road," head coach Jim Barnes said. "Houston is playing a lot better than they've played in the last couple of years. They're taking teams to five sets - SMU to five sets - so it'll be a hard-fought match because we're pretty evenly matched."
Last weekend, Tulane snapped a six-match losing streak with a thrilling come from behind win against ECU. After falling behind 2-0, the Green Wave dug in and fought back in a big way, showing remarkable heart to win 3-2 (23-25, 15-25, 25-17, 25-19, 15-9). Senior setter Justine Bowers powered the Green Wave with 52 assists and 13 digs, celebrating her Senior Day with her fourth double-double performance of the season, while freshman outside hitter Lexie Douglas finished with a career-high and match-high 18 kills.Â
"We've been fighting all along," Barnes said. "Some things came together just in time in that match. A lot of things we were working on came through. Our left side hitters were great, and if we can get our players on the left side swinging hard and putting balls away, it makes everything else work. The ECU match was a perfect example of doing that."
The Green Wave close their season with back-to-back contests against Houston, marking the first time the programs have met this season. Last season, Tulane swept Houston, winning 3-1 at Houston thanks to then-sophomore Dayna Kern's 10 kills and four blocks. Bowers recorded 48 assists, while then-freshman Kaylie McHugh posted 28 digs in the victory at Houston, before the Green Wave won the rematch, 3-0, at Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
A win at Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse Friday will give Tulane a winning record at home in a season for the first time since 2013 when the Green Wave went 28-4 (12-2 at home).
