Green Wave open conference play with victory
PRINTABLE BOX
NEW ORLEANS – Inclement weather may have delayed the start of Tulane women's tennis' (9-2) match vs Houston (4-3) but it didn't stop the Green Wave from opening up American Athletic Conference play with a victory, downing the Cougars, 4-1, on Saturday. The Olive and Blue claimed its ninth doubles point of the season before the bottom half of the Wave's singles line-up came through for the clinch.
"Incredibly proud of the girls today for a couple of reasons," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "First, the spirit and fight was evident from the beginning and I know it truly set the tone for the day. Secondly we played much smarter under pressure and dictated really well. Overall, it was much more of a mentality of playing a complete match and if we continue to approach matches with this mindset, big things are ahead."
Houston jumped on Tulane in doubles, claiming a win on court three. Yet the Wave fought back, as the new pairing of Ivone Alvaro and Sade Atkinson earned a quick 6-2 win on court two. Then the tandem of Naz Karagoz and Elena Muller clinched on court one via a 6-4 decision.
In singles, Houston evened the team score after a 6-3, 6-0, win on court one. Then, the Wave turned to three of its underclassmen on courts 4-6 to turn the momentum, starting with a Muller 6-1, 6-1 win on court five.
Next, Christina Sisti won her team leading fourth straight match with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court six. Then fellow freshman Ivone Alvaro clinched the conference victory with a 6-4, 6-3, win on court four.
"Obviously, it's nice to grab a win over a conference opponent, especially since we won this match last year only 4-3," Sisk added. "I definitely know that the hard work is paying off and we are becoming a stronger team."
Up next, the Green Wave look to make it two in a row against conference opposition when they return to City Park tomorrow, clashing with South Florida at 1 p.m.
