Green Wave start 2-0 in American Athletic Conference play
PRINTABLE BOX
NEW ORLEANS – For over three-and-a-half hours, the Tulane women's tennis team (10-2) battled the University of South Florida (4-5) on the courts at City Park, ultimately emerging with the 4-3 victory. The win completed an American Athletic Conference weekend sweep for the Green Wave after previously dispatching Houston in their league opener on Saturday.
Â
"I was so impressed with the girls mentality," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "When they got here today there was a whole different vibe about this team. They were really dialed in to the details and you saw what happened when they are focused on the task. Last year, we lost 4-0 to USF in Tampa so we wanted to perform well today. With this being our second American match-up, we knew this was important and we needed to send a statement."
Â
In doubles, the newly formed international duo of Sade Atkinson and Ivone Alvaro earned their second straight victory in as many days, cruising to a 6-2 win on court two. Next, after the Wave suffered a 6-4 loss on court one, all eyes turned to Christina Sisti and Kyla Klier on court three. Tied at 5-5, each side earned a break to force a tiebreaker, where Sisti/Klier charged ahead for the 7-6(3) clinch.
Â
Later tied 1-1 after a USF win on court two, Tulane once again turned to its dynamic freshmen duo of Alvaro and Sisti, who each capped a 2-0 weekend in singles today. Alvaro improved to 6-3 after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Olga Martinez. Then Sisti won her fifth straight to improve to 9-1 with a 6-1, 6-4, win vs. Jessica Chaves on court six.
Â
USF threatened a comeback, evening the score with a three-set win on court five, but Atkinson shut the door with a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 clincher over Nicole Dzenga.
Â
Up next, the Green Wave clash with a familiar foe in LSU this Wednesday at 2 p.m. CT, back out at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
