Women's Tennis Welcomes in No. 28 LSU on Wednesday
Feb 21, 2017 | Women's Tennis

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's tennis team (10-2) will look to maintain its unblemished mark at home this Wednesday at 2 p.m. when they host in-state rival No. 28 LSU (7-1) at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center. The match-up marks the 40th meeting between the two programs, as the Green Wave search for their first win over the Tigers since a 7-0 sweep in 2005.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane posted a strong start to American Athletic Conference play, downing Houston in their league opener, 4-1, before battling USF for nearly four hours for the 4-3 victory. As a result, the Wave improved to 6-0 at home this spring. Â
Â
GRABBING THE EARLY LEAD
The Olive and Blue are also 10-2 in winning the doubles point this season. Last weekend, Coach Sisk mixed the doubles lineup as a new international flavored pairing was created in Sade Atkinson and Ivone Alvaro. The duo responded with a 2-0 weekend.
Â
YOUTHFUL BOOST
Also highlighting last weekend was the fact that Tulane freshmen Christina Sisti and Ivone Alvaro led the charge for the Wave victories in singles play, as each won in straight sets against both Houston and USF. Alvaro is now 6-3 on the year while Sisti leads the Wave with a 9-1 dual record.
Â
QUITE THE TURN-AROUND
Tulane's 10-2 record ties the 2012 Green Wave squad's mark for best start during Coach Sisk's nine-year reign at the helm. The 2012 team eventually went on to post the most wins in the Sisk era at 19-6. Meanwhile, the 2017 squad has recorded a big turn-around, already topping last year's win total just 12 matches into the season. Â
Â
SCOUTING LSU
LSU checked in at No. 28 in this week's new Oracle/ITA top-50 poll. The Tigers are off to a 7-1 start and bested the same teams as Tulane last weekend in Houston and USF. Wednesday's showdown with the Green Wave marks LSU's first true road test of the season. In doubles, the Tigers have taken the early 1-0 advantage in seven of eight possible opportunities.
Â
LSU boasts three ranked singles competitors in No. 52 Jade Lewis, No. 87 Joana Valle Costa and No. 95 Ryann Foster. In doubles, Valle Costa and Foster check in at No. 43.
