THE WOODLANDS, Texas – The Tulane women's golf team is back on the links, heading back to the Lone Star State for the third time this season, to compete in the 2017 edition of The Dickson at The Woodlands Country Club.
The 54-hole tournament is set to start play Monday with 36 holes followed by an 18-hole final round on Tuesday. Both days are scheduled to begin with shotgun starts at 8 a.m.
The Green Wave are up against another tough field with 10 of the other 15 teams ranked in the top 60, including No. 3 Florida State, No. 10 Kent Sate, No. 17 Texas A&M, No. 18 Purdue, No. 23 Oklahoma, No. 35 Texas Tech, No. 39 UNLV, No. 42 SMU and No. 51 Houston.
Tulane enters the tournament ranked 75th and is slated to open play with the lineup of sophomore Laura Munoz at No. 1, sophomore Sofia Goicoechea at No. 2, redshirt freshman Elise Genoux at No. 3, freshman Gabrielle Correia at No. 4 and freshman Haydyn Gibson at No. 5. Head coach Lorne Don said he hopes his young lineup will spark the Wave coming off hosting the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship.
"We once again had two great individual performances (at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate) with Laura finishing tied for 10th and Sofia finishing tied for 28th, which in that field was phenomenal," said Don. "We're seeing some good improvements in some areas, but again, we need to see that consistency from all five players over three rounds. I think, if we can do that, I don't think there's any reason we can't compete to start winning some of these tournaments. We haven't quite gotten there yet."
The 36-hole opening day at The Dickson mirrors the 36-hole final day at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate so Don said he hopes that experience will help his young squad be ready to tackle the long day on the course.
"The biggest thing is mental fatigue when you are out there 10 hours playing golf the entire time," said Don. "That's something we had to fight through this past week. Some of them handled it better than others and that's something we have to get better at dealing with. When you feel that setting in, it's so important to make sure you're eating out there and keeping hydrated. When that mental fatigue sets in, just allow yourself to take maybe an extra couple of seconds to think about a shot or think about what you are trying to do to make sure you are making the right decision. We did that well in some places at our tournament and we just have to do it a little bit better at The Dickson."
Next up after The Dickson, Tulane takes a break until March 24-26 when the Wave will take the short ride on I-10 to Baton Rouge, La. for the LSU Tiger Golf Classic at the University Club.
