Green Wave to complete Blue-Gray Classic on Saturday
PRINTABLE BOX
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Tulane women's tennis team (11-3) tried to make it two ranked wins in a row on Friday morning when they kicked off the Blue-Gray Classic by challenging No. 8 Auburn (14-1), however the Tigers advanced in the eight-team bracket via a 4-0 victory. Yet, the Green Wave were very much in the thick of the fight against a top-10 team, as the three unfinished matches were all battling in third sets.
"Today was amazing. Obviously we wanted to win our match versus Auburn because we knew it was a huge opportunity and one that we were ready for," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "In doubles, on all three courts, we lost several deuce points that completely shifted momentum and put us in a tight situation as we knew we needed to execute well. We knew they wouldn't give us any free points. Going into singles down 1-0 could have easily taken our spirit but the way we responded was absolutely brilliant. In three of our singles matches we were in the third set. Sade also lost in two tough tiebreaks so to say the heart and fight were there is truly an understatement."
Trailing 1-0 after doubles, the Olive and Blue later found themselves with a bigger mountain to climb after straight-set losses on courts two and six, as the latter ended Christina Sisti's impressive six match win streak.
However, the Green Wave continued to fight on, starting at the top where Naz Karagoz rallied after a first-set loss to claim the second set 6-3 vs No. 36 Alizee Michaud, before the match went unfinished down 4-3 in the third.
Freshman Ivone Alvaro also battled back after a first set loss, taking her second set, 6-3, and was on the verge of victory, up 5-3, in the third. In addition, sophomore Elena Muller was up 6-4, 4-6, 2-1 when her match was stopped.
The finisher of the match came on court three, in what was a back-and-forth affair that could have gone either way as No. 99 Taylor Russo bested Sade Atkinson, 7-6, 7-6.
"I told them afterwards that this was by far the best tennis I've seen from them and honestly the only difference was they are hungry for success and believe in each other and their ability to compete with a top-10 team," Sisk added.
Lastly, Tulane's day wasn't done just yet, as they competed in the doubles portion of their match vs No. 47 Texas in second round action. Karagoz and Elena Muller recorded a 6-4 victory on court one while Alvaro and Atkinson notched a 6-3 win on court two, clinching the doubles point.
The Wave will resume their match with Texas with the singles portion on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.
