TUCSON, Ariz. – The Tulane women's tennis team (7-1) made the most of its chance to quickly bounce back from its first loss of the season, defeating UTEP Friday morning by the score of 4-1. The Green Wave lost their first doubles point of the season but responded with strong singles play, receiving victories from Naz Karagoz, Sade Atkinson, Ivone Alvaro and Christina Sisti.
"Getting a win to end our trip here is definitely a positive and obviously feels better than yesterday's loss," Tulane head coach Terri Sisk said. "I wasn't too happy with how we started in doubles today as we came out flat and without energy, and that factor alone gave the point to UTEP. However we looked much better in singles and executed well under the unknown pressure of being down 1-0 after doubles. We definitely looked more like ourselves and played with energy and the desire to win."
Two Tulane freshmen in Alvaro and Sisti shone bright on Friday. First, the duo paired together for a 6-1 doubles victory on court three, improving to 3-0 as a team. Then, the tandem each picked up straight-set victories in singles.
Speaking of singles, Karagoz earned her team leading seventh win of the young dual season, while Atkinson played the role of clincher today, triumphing over Duda Santos, 6-2, 7-6(9), for her fifth straight win.
"Yesterday's loss really stung and it sat with us because we all knew that result wasn't anywhere near our ability," Sisk added. "Overall I'm happy with how we responded today against a very scrappy UTEP team. We will now begin preparing for another solid road trip next weekend to South Carolina against two tough teams."
Up next, the Olive and Blue head east to South Carolina where they'll challenge Winthrop on Friday, Feb. 10, at 1 p.m. CT, followed by Furman on Sunday at Noon.
