NEW ORLEANS – Ross Massey was solid for 6.2 innings, but Tulane baseball mustered two runs and five hits in a 6-2 defeat to San Diego Sunday afternoon to close out the four-game series at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
Massey struck out six and allowed two earned runs, four runs in total, scattering seven hits and just two walks. He was saddled with the loss to fall to 0-3 on the season as the Green Wave fell to 3-12. Redshirt freshman Jonathon Artigues, who received his first start behind the plate, went 2-for-2 with a walk in three plate appearances. Lex Kaplan hit an RBI single in the third inning to score Jake Willsey, and Hunter Hope homered in the ninth.
Â
"(Massey) is moving in the right direction, which is a positive," Tulane head coach Travis Jewett said. "I told him and the team that we're going to need that evolution forward for us to have a chance. He did a good job for us, and did what you'd ask any starting pitcher to do. I was proud of his effort."
Â
Willsey reached on a one-out infield single up the third base line for Tulane's first hit of the game in the third inning. Artigues followed with a walk, and Kaplan drove a two-out base hit through the right side to score Willsey and cut the deficit to 2-1. Down to its last at bat, Hope crushed a solo home run with two outs in the ninth inning off the top of the video board in left center to make the score 6-2.
Â
San Diego (10-3) scored single runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-0 lead. A catcher's interference, followed by a pair of two-out singles, including an RBI base hit by Connor Doyle scored the first run. An RBI double by Jay Schuyler scored a run in the third inning, and Paul Kunst singled in the fifth, then scored on an error and sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
Â
The Toreros added two runs in the seventh, on three walks, a passed ball, three wild pitches and a single, making the score 5-1. A base hit and RBI groundout in the top of the ninth made it 6-1.
Â
San Diego starter Paul Richan (1-0) allowed a run on three hits with seven strikeouts in 6.0 innings to earn the win, and Jonathan Teaney pitched the final three frames for his first save of the season.
Â
The Green Wave returns to action Wednesday at Nicholls State. First pitch is 6 p.m. The game can be heard on 88.3 FM WRBH and the TuneIn Radio app.
