American Athletic Conference Tabs Reynolds as 2017 Most Improved Player of the Year
Mar 8, 2017 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Following a vote conducted by the league's 11 head coaches, Tulane redshirt junior Cameron Reynolds has been named the American Athletic Conference Most Improved Player of the Year for the 2016-17 season according to an announcement on Wednesday afternoon.
"I can't say I'm surprised Cameron won this award," head coach Mike Dunleavy, Sr. said. "It is well-deserved by him because he's put in so much extra work since my arrival at Tulane. We were able to adjust his role and put him in situations where he can be successful and his response has been everything we could have hoped for. He's been terrific."
Reynolds closed out the regular season ranked sixth among all players in the conference in scoring at 17.0 points per game, complemented by an average of 6.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting nearly 43 percent overall and over 39 percent behind the 3-point line. His 75 conversions from beyond the arc currently stand as the fourth most in a single-season in school history and just eight shy of tying the record.
The Pearland, Texas native has scored in double-figures 26 times, including each of the final 17 regular-season games, and registered at least 20 points on 13 different occasions. He compiled four double-doubles and knocked down multiple 3-pointers in 21 games, including at least three treys in 13 separate tilts.
In the Green Wave's season finale against Tulsa on March 5, Reynolds tallied his first 30-point performance, pouring in 31 while setting personal-bests with eight free throws and seven 3-pointers made – tied for the second most in a single game in program history. Facing four nationally-ranked opponents this year, he averaged 20.3 points per game against those teams and scored at least 20 points three times.
In 73 games prior to the start of the season, Reynolds averaged 5.1 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists, while shooting just under 33 percent from the field and under 27 percent beyond the three-point line in 18.3 minutes per contest. After suiting up for just nine games in 2014-15 and later earning a medical redshirt, his second full season in 2015-16 produced 6.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game in 30 appearances.
Seeded 10th, Tulane (6-24, 3-15 American), will travel to Hartford, Conn., to compete in the first round of the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship and will face No. 7 seed Tulsa (14-16, 8-10 American) for a third time this season on Thursday, March 9 at the XL Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m. (CT) and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU with streaming available on the WatchESPN app.
