Outdoor Track & Field’s Esmay Breaks Hammer Throw Record to Open Mt. SAC Relays

TORRANCE, Calif. – Tulane's outdoor track & field squad got off to a hot start on Thursday evening at the Mt. SAC Relays, breaking a school record in the hammer throw alongside a pair of event titles and four career bests at the Murdock Track on the campus of El Camino College in California. Day one produced strong marks across the board for the Green Wave with two days of competition remaining.

We also picked up two event titles, with Emmanuel leading the men's steeplechase and Lauren winning the women's 10,000m, both on personal records. HIGHLIGHTS FROM DAY ONE OF THE MT. SAC RELAYS
Tulane opened up its three-day weekend with a school record from Jacqueline Esmay in the women's hammer, throwing for a mark of 57.48m (188-07) for a career high. With her new school record, Esmay claimed fourth place in the event for Tulane's first of four top-five finishes on the day.
On the track, sophomore Emmanuel Rotich ran a personal best of his own, coming away with his second event title in as many meets in the men's 3,000m steeplechase. His quick time of 8:48.32 now ranks second on Tulane's all-time list and sixth in the nation.
Juniors Lauren Bartels and Emma Newton would also post career-best times on the evening, each placing in the top five of the women's 10,000m race. Bartels took home the event title in her first 10K of the year, shaving a minute off of her previous personal best, while Newton would finish fifth in the first 10,000m of her career.
Tulane's final personal record came in the women's 3,000m steeplechase, as Mckenzie Melius came in four seconds under her previous career time for a 28th place finish in a field of tough competition. Mikayla Sonneborn finished just behind Melius in her second-fastest time of the season.
Junior Moses Aloiloi wrapped up the night in the men's 10,000m, finishing just over a minute shy of a personal-best time.

Nearly a dozen more events highlight Tulane's Friday schedule at the Mt. SAC Relays, which opens at 12:30 with freshman Sarah Cella in the women's 1,500m.
