EUGUNE, Ore. – The Tulane track & field program is ready to leave its mark at the NCAA Outdoor Championships this week as five student-athletes will represent the Green Wave in six different events. Competition will take place June 7-10 at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
Emmanuel Rotich is the first male in school history to compete in more than one event on the national level, participating in both the 3000m steeplechase and the 5000m run.
Rotich will get things going for the Wave on Wednesday with the semifinal round of the 3000m steeplechase, running in heat No. 2 at approximately 7:02 p.m. CT. The top five from each of the two heats, plus the next two fastest overall times, will move on to compete in Friday's final, slated for 7:54 p.m. Rotich is ranked third in the country in the steeplechase, recording a NCAA qualifying best time of 8:36.40 at Regionals.
Meanwhile, the final for the 5000m run won't get underway till Friday at 9:25 p.m.
Raymond Kibet will get started on Wednesday evening as well, running in heat three of the 400m, which is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The top-two from each heat qualify, along with the next two fastest times, as eight individuals advance to Friday's 8:32 p.m. final.
Kibet heads into the week ranked No. 10 nationally in the event, posting a time of 45.21 at NCAA Regionals. The time broke his previous personal best and own school record in the event.
On the women's side, the trio of Daliadiz Ortiz, Alyssa Applebee and Jessica Duckett will begin competition Thursday with Applebee set to compete in the pole vault final at 7 p.m., followed by Ortiz in the javelin throw at 7:45 p.m.
