Blue Takes Down Olive in Volleyball's Preseason Scrimmage
Aug 19, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
NEW ORLEANS --Â The Tulane volleyball team held its second annual Olive & Blue scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at the Hertz Center after two weeks of preseason practices. The Blue team, led by key returners sophomore libero Kaylie McHugh and junior outside hitter Hannah Shaw, defeated the Olive team, 2-1 (25-17, 16-25, 25-18).
"It was a great scrimmage for us," head coach Jim Barnes said. "It was nice for the ladies to go through game day procedures, but just to compete in front of a crowd is great experience. We had a nice crowd for a scrimmage, and I think the women were really happy to see a lot of supporters out here."
The match, which consisted of three sets played to 25, gave fans the opportunity to get an early glimpse of the 2017 team prior to the start of the season. McHugh recorded 21 digs, while freshman right side hitter Kristen Thompson picked up 18 kills to go along with a match-high .529 attack percentage. Senior setter Justine Bowers and junior middle hitter Dayna Kern added 27 assists and 13 kills (attack percentage of .379), respectively, for the Olive team.
"The team played solid," Barnes said. "We had some ups and downs, but the scrimmage was really competitive and I think the fans enjoyed it."
