RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. – Former Tulane women's golfer Samantha Troyanovich completed the first step in earning an LPGA Tour card, finishing tied for 38th in Stage I of LPGA Qualifying School at the Mission Hills Country Club.
Â
Troyanovich, who starred for the Green Wave from 2008-12, shot two under par over the 72-hole tournament to easily place among the top 90 finishers and advance to the next stage. She opened and closed strong with a -2 (70) in the first round and -3 (69) in the final round, playing the Palmer and Dinah Shore courses.
Â
The next step in the LPGA Q-School process is Stage II set for October 16-22 at Plantation Golf and Country Club, Venice, Fla. This stage will feature four former Green Wave golfers chasing their LPGA Tour dreams with Emily Penttilä (2012-16), Gemma Dryburgh (2011-15) and Lili Alvarez (2002-05) joining Troyanovich. Last year, Penttilä and Dryburgh advanced to Stage III but were not among the qualifiers earning the 20 full and 25 partial tour cards.
Â
Troyanovich is back on the links this weekend Aug. 31-Sept. 3 in Portland, Ore. to participate in the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic Presented by JTBC. The Golf Channel is set for coverage of the tournament on Thursday (7-9 p.m. CT), Friday (5:30-7:30 p.m.), Saturday (5:30-7:30 p.m.) and Sunday (4-6 p.m.). This will mark the third LPGA event Troyanovich has made the field in her professional career.
Â
The Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich., native was one of two former Tulane standouts participating in the first stage of LPGA Q-School as Madison Opfer (2012-16) was also among 361-player field. Opfer started strong, sitting at one under par through the first 36 holes, but but failed to finish in the top 90 to advance to the next stage.
