BUENOS AIRES, Argentina -- Former Tulane women's golfer Silvia Garcés placed second in the South American Amateur Golf Championship at Martindale Country Club, notching her best-ever finish as an amateur.
Garces, who starred for the Green Wave from 2012-16, shot five-under-par over the 72-hole tournament, which brings together players representing 25 different countries. She opened with a strong -4 (68) in the first round, before shooting 2 (74) and -2 (70) in the second and third rounds, respectively, to enter the final day with a one-stroke lead ahead of eventual winner Milagros Chávez.
The Tulane alumnus was in control on the front nine, playing bogey-free golf and recording a birdie on the second hole to sit at one under. Garces' three birdies on the back nine were erased by double bogeys on hole No. 13 and No. 18, and she finished the round at par, losing to Chávez by one stroke.
Garces' second-place finish is her career-best, topping her fourth-place finish at last year's South American Amateur Championship at Martindale, as well as her seventh-place finish at the Mexican Women's Amateur Golf Championship (Jan. 4-7, 2018).
The Cali, Colombia native was a four-year letterwinner at Tulane, playing in 133 rounds in 45 tournaments and sporting a 74.94 (9967 strokes) career scoring average, which ranks fourth all-time in program history. Garces had 24 career rounds of par or better, including a school-record low 7-under 65 during the second round of the 2015 UCF Challenge.
Garces also owns the sixth-lowest single-season scoring average in program history with a 73.76 during the 2013-14 campaign. She had five top-five finishes and 14 total top-20 efforts in her career, and her ninth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships is the best by a Tulane golfer in the national championship rounds.
