NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane track & field will waste no time rolling into the New Year, continuing its indoor season after a month-long hiatus for winter break at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational Friday inside the Carl Maddox Field House in Baton Rouge. Field events are set to begin at 10:30 am, while running events begin at 1 p.m.
ABOUT THE MEET
"The big purpose for this meet is just giving our student-athletes a chance to compete and measure where they're at compared to the Birmingham meet right before finals," associate head coach Doug Fraley said. "We give our kids workouts to do over the break, so what we're doing now is just getting reorganized. Going up to this meet this week at LSU gives us an opportunity to evaluate the kind of shape our kids have come back in from winter break. This meet will give us an evaluation of where we're at so that we can really bear down and get back into a proper routine."
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane track & field opened its 2017-18 indoor season in early December at the BSC Panther Icebreaker with the women's team, led by junior Rebekah Markel, setting numerous personal records. Markel dazzled in the pole vault finals and delivered the performance of the meet, finishing first with a mark of 4.00m to set a new personal best and earn the fourth-best mark in Tulane indoor history.
Junior Jessica Duckett finished second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.59, just a few ticks away from her school indoor record in the 60m hurdles (8.44). Duckett also finished fifth in the 400m dash with a personal best of 57.10, while sophomore Brandi Hughes finished 10th (58.76) in the 400m dash. Sophomore Maya Harewood's time of 24.80 in the 200m dash was a personal best and is tenth-best in Tulane indoor history.
"We had a handful of really good performances at that meet, and a handful of performances that we expected based on our training before that meet," Fraley said. "The important thing from that meet was the coaches gaining a better idea of where the kids are at. We'd been doing a lot of training, but we hadn't been measuring ourselves against other competition until then. This meet at LSU provides us with a measuring stick, so we use it as a glorified training session. It's an opportunity for us to compete against other teams and set the tone for us to get back into a training routine."
THIS TIME LAST YEAR
Last season at the Purple Tiger Invitational, the team collected fifteen top-ten finishes, including an event title in the women's pole vault. Markel earned a third-place finish with a mark of 3.59 meters (11-9.25) in the pole vault, while Duckett and Harewood shined in the track events. Duckett notched a second-place finish in the 400 meter on her time of 58.74, and Harewood finished third in 58.93.
