Washington, DC – The Tulane sailing team finished day one of the Tom Curtis Memorial Invitational Regatta on Saturday, recording a fifth-place team finish on the water after eight combined races.
"Each week gets a bit tougher and with the other schools present, the Tom Curtis Invitational certainly showed us that," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Each of our three boats continued to show how far we progressed, but also showed how far we still have to go. Even with those mistakes, it's great seeing the pairings of Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan] with Grace [Bloomfield], and Connor [Mcavoy] with Kate [Lenhard] both sitting in the top ten."
The Green Wave's A, B and C Division teams totaled 261 points in the first day of the regatta, ahead of Old Dominion with 320 points while behind host Georgetown with 145, George Washington with 201, Navy with 211 and St. Mary's with 217.
"Each of the other teams present are perennially ranked teams, so there are walk-overs. That quality makes us pay for each mistake," Higgins said. "That being said, I'm proud of how our team handled the difficult conditions and competition."
Freshman skipper Ciara Rodriquez-Horan and senior crew Grace Bloomfield sailed the Division A races, recording 63 total points to earn a sixth-place finish among the 18 total teams. The second race of the day was the duo's best, with the team finishing in second place, while also adding two fifth-place finishes in the first half of the inter-conference regatta.
In the Division B races, junior skipper Connor Mcavoy and sophomore crew Kate Lenhard teamed up to earn a tenth-place finish among the 18 teams, finishing with 80 points. The two recorded a team high sixth-place finish in the second race of the day, followed by two seventh place finishes and one ninth place finish for four notable top-ten performances.
Senior skipper Harris Cram and freshman crew Bamboo Trinh competed for the first time this season in the Division C races, totaling 118 points after eight races. The team earned an 11th place finish in race number four, marking a team best on day one.
"Hopefully tomorrow we can gain a bit more consistency and move up the leaderboard," Higgins said.
The Green Wave will finish the competition on Sunday, with each division sailing ten more races to total 18 in the two-day regatta.
