
Bartels, Women's Cross Country Earn Academic Honors from USTFCCCA

NEW ORLEANS - The U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Tulane cross country senior Lauren Bartels to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's All-Academic Team in an announcement made Friday. The USTFCCCA also recognized the Green Wave women's squad for their excellence off the course with All-Academic Team honors.
Bartels, a chemical engineering major, has shined in the classroom while at Tulane, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.991. On the course this past season, Bartels recorded a 22nd place finish at the 2017 NCAA South Central Regional with a time of 20:35.8, setting a new personal record in the process and guiding the women's team to an eighth place finish. She received All-Region honors by finishing among the top 25 runners.
There were 269 student-athletes named USTFCCCA All-Academic with women accounting for 63 percent of the total (169). In order to qualify for the honor, athletes must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 and finish in the top-25 (or 10 percent) at regionals or as an All-American in the national meet.
The Tulane women's squad was one of 269 women's teams across the country recognized for academic accomplishments. As a team, the Green Wave held a 3.505 cumulative GPA in the fall. On the course, the women earned a fifth-place finish at the 2017 American Athletic Conference Championship, their top team finish since joining the conference, and an eighth-place finish at the 2017 NCAA South Central Regional, which was their highest finish at a regional meet since the 1990s.
In order to receive academic honors, teams had to hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a four-point scale in the fall semester while also performing well throughout the season.
