Mar 18, 2018 | Women's Tennis
MEMPHIS - The Tulane women's tennis team won the doubles point, but dropped its final road match of the season, 5-2, to Memphis in American Athletic Conference action Sunday afternoon at the Racquet Club of Memphis.
Tulane (8-8, 1-1 AAC) got off to a great start, establishing early leads on all three doubles courts. Playing at the No. 1 position, Sade Atkinson and Laura Fabrizi never trailed en route to a 6-2 victory over Alisha Reayer and Laura Bente. Despite holding a 3-2 advantage at the No. 2 spot, the Green Wave dropped the final four games to the Tigers, who evened up the race for the first team point. The battle on court three heated up quickly, where Sofia Kurtz and Daniela La Fuente held serve to open up a 4-3 lead. Memphis (10-7, 2-3 AAC) won the next two games for its first lead, but the Wave bounced back to take the final three games and clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 victory.
The Tigers pounced with the start of singles play however, claiming straight-set victories on courts one, two and four to overtake the Green Wave and establish a 3-1 lead in the overall match. Ivone Alvaro claimed a 7-5 first set win on court four, but dropped the final two sets, as Memphis clinched the match.
Elena Muller notched a 6-1 first set win on court five, but dropped the second frame, 6-3, before falling in the third set tiebreaker, 10-5. Tulane earned the final point of the day on court six, where Christina Sisti bounced back from a 6-1 setback in the first set, countering with a 7-5 triumph in set two after trailing 5-4 to force a deciding tiebreaker. Sisti jumped ahead early, 8-3, before finishing it off, 10-5, to close out the match.
Tulane returns home for a pair of conference matches beginning Saturday, March 24 against Tulsa, before taking on SMU the following day. Both matches are scheduled to begin at noon and will be played at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
