SUNSET, S.C. – The Tulane University women's golf team sits in 14th-place thanks to an opening round score of 300 Friday afternoon at the Clemson Invitational. The three-day event is being held at The Reserve at Lake Keowee (par 72, 6,260 yards).
As a team, Tulane finished the afternoon with 57 pars, nine birdies and one eagle.
The lone eagle on the afternoon came from junior Laura Munoz, who was the low individual on the day for the Green Wave, as she carded an opening round score of one-over-par 73 and is tied for 34th overall. Her round one score of 73 marked her lowest single round score of the spring.
"We really wanted to focus in on two things today and that was our attitude and our decision making and I thought our players did a really good job with both of those things today," head coach Lorne Don said. "Minus a couple bad swings today, I thought we played really well."
Sophomore Gabrielle Correia was the next Green Wave finisher after she posted a score of 75. She is currently tied for 55th, heading into day two competition. Correia's opening round 75 also marked her lowest scoring output of the spring.
Junior Sofia Goicoechea, freshman Jennifer Rosenberg and sophomore Haydyn Gibson rounded out Tulane's lineup, as all three individuals tallied scores of 76. All three individuals are currently tied for 62nd.
"Confidence wise, I think our team feels really good coming into tomorrow," Don said. "The weather looks like it could be a little bit more challenging and it could be a little bit cooler. From our standpoint, we're excited about that and it could make things a little tougher and could give us a chance to move up the leaderboard."
Furman and Michigan State are tied for the team lead after both squads shot an opening round tally of 277. MSU's Sarah Burnham leads all individuals after she carded a score of 66.
Day two competition begins tomorrow morning. Live stats can be found by clicking here.
