NEW ORLEANS - Winners of five straight, the No. 32/24 Tulane men's tennis team travels to Fort Worth, Texas to take on No. 11/12 TCU on Sunday, March 25. First serve is set for 4 p.m., at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane (11-5) its third win in as many years over in-state rival LSU in a 7-0 home victory on Wednesday afternoon in City Park. The Green Wave clinched the doubles point with victories on courts one and two, respectively, before claiming all six singles matches - five of which were decided in straight sets.
SCOUTING TCU
The Horned Frogs (11-3) enter Sunday's contest riding a five-match winning streak, which includes four straight over ranked foes, including No. 17 Duke (4-0), at No. 12 Florida (4-3), No. 9 Columbia (4-0) and most recently at No. 6 Texas A&M (4-3) on Tuesday.
TCU possesses four singles players and three total doubles tandems ranked in the latest ITA poll. Singles rankings include No. 12 Alex Rybakov, No. 33 Alastair Gray, No. 64 Trevor Johnson and No. 114 Guillermo Nunez, while Rybakov and Nunez combine as the No. 21 duo, Rybakov and Gray stand No. 26, and Bertus Kruger and Reese Stalder hold the No. 42 listing.
THE ALL-TIME SERIES
Sunday's match will mark the eighth meeting between Tulane and TCU with the Frogs holding a 5-2 advantage in the all-time series. It will be the first time the teams have faced off since 2004, when the Green Wave earned a 4-1 victory in the first round of the Conference USA Tournament in Memphis.
IN THE RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA team rankings, Tulane ranks No. 32 nationally, which is currently the second highest of any American Athletic Conference program behind Memphis at No. 22. The Green Wave's highest ranking this season was No. 20, matching their 2017 high, which is also the highest under head coach Mark Booras' leadership.
The Wave has two players listed in the singles poll and one doubles teams ranked. Senior and 2017 All-America choice Constantin Schmitz holds the Wave's highest singles ranking at No. 19, followed by sophomore Ewan Moore at No. 92.
In the USTA College Tennis Poll released on March 14, the Wave was tabbed No. 24 in the country.
DOUBLES POINT DICTATION
The doubles point is coveted by most teams in dual matches and it has been very indicative of Tulane's success this spring. The Green Wave are 9-0 when winning two of three doubles matches, but just 2-5 when they do not. The Wave's only victories without the doubles point include a pair of 5-2 road wins at Middle Tennessee on March 2 and Auburn on March 15.
CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Ewan Moore was chosen as the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 27, after posting a 2-0 mark at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No.1 doubles for the Green Wave, including a straight set victory over the nation's No. 20 player, Giovanni Oradini of 39th-ranked Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-4, on Friday evening. He followed up that performance by outlasting Connor Curry, 7-6(4), 6-4, as part of a 7-0 Tulane rout of 21st-ranked Texas Tech just two days later.
Constantin Schmitz was named The American's first Player of the Week for the 2018 spring season on Jan. 23 after a 6-3, 6-2 singles victory over No. 78 Christian Langmo to clinch the match in the Green Wave's 6-1 season-opening victory over Miami (Fla.). The weekly nod was the sixth of Schmitz's career, as he received the honor five times last season in addition to the being named the league's player of the month in October of 2016.
ONE TOUGH SLATE
Tulane increased the intensity of its 2018 spring schedule and will face 10 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. In addition to American Athletic Conference foes USF, Memphis and SMU, the Green Wave will do battle with California, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Rice, TCU, Texas, and Stanford.
RAISING THE BAR
The Green Wave won 19 dual matches during the 2017 season, the most for the program in the post-Katrina era. The previous best was 16, set in 2016.
