NEW ORLEANS - Tulane cross country senior Lauren Bartels was named the women's cross country 2017-18 American Athletic Conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in an announcement made by the league office Tuesday.
Bartels, a chemical engineering major, has shined in the classroom while at Tulane, maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.991. On the course this past season, Bartels recorded a 22nd place finish at the 2017 NCAA South Central Regional with a time of 20:35.8, setting a new personal record in the process and guiding the women's team to an eighth place finish. She received All-Region honors by finishing among the top 25 runners.
Earlier this year, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association named Bartels to the 2017 NCAA Division I Women's All-Academic Team in recognition of her strong performance in the classroom.
