Sep 17, 2021 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
FINAL RESULTS
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama – The Tulane University men's and women's cross country teams opened its respective 2021 campaigns Friday as they competed in the North Alabama Showcase.
The women's team finished 12th among the 21-team field and posted 343 points in the 5-kilometer race. The men's team placed 14th among the 17-team field in the 8K race and tallied 387 points.
"I'm really proud of how our programs went out and competed today," director of cross c country/track and field Adrian Myers said. "We're working really hard right now trying to give us the best opportunity to be competitive in October and November. So we will learn a lot from this opener and continue to grow as a program."
Senior Therese Olhanski led the way for the women's team as she finished 20th in a time of 17:33.84. Tulane's next finisher was junior Laura Croll, as she clocked a time of 18:15.07.
Macy Turcotte (56th, 18:30.32) Brenda Ellis (141st, 20:13.64) and Abigail Heck (151st, 20:54.95) rounded out the Green Wave lineup.
"The women honestly did a fantastic job today," Myers said. "We ran five athletes and finished in the middle of a very competitive meet. Therese is a real competitor with a strong pedigree to help us this year. I'm excited to see how she develops over season and seasons ahead. Laura and Macy both have not raced cross country in at least two years, so they really broke out for us in providing strong support up front."
On the men's side, junior Evans Kipchumbba led the way for the Green Wave, as he finished 54th in a time of 25:50.86. Teammates Tucker Poshard placed 87th (26:32.85) while Bethwell Tum placed 96th (26:59.64).
"I'm very happy with men's effort today," Myers said. "They've been working hard every week and getting noticeably better each session. Today won't reflect just yet the work put in and the performances ahead of them. Evans ran tough through the course after a blistering start. I'm very excited about Tucker's race today, he was aggressive and steady through the race. He will be a name to pay attention over the next few years."
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 16, as it heads to Texas A&M to take part in the Arturo Barrios Invitational.
"I knew have work to do as we build this program," Myers said. "Today was reassuring that we will get there just as I see it."
