Track & Field Posts Seven Top-Three Finishes to Open Brutus Hamilton Challenge

BERKELEY, Calif. - Tulane track and field kicked off the Brutus Hamilton Challenge with seven top-three finishes and a handful of new personal bests, as the Green Wave's athletes continued their preparations for the championship season inside Cal's Edwards Stadium on Friday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
One week after setting a new school record in the 3000m steeplechase, junior Mckenzie Melius ran in the event again, finishing first with a time of 10:46.12. Freshman Reid Belanger made her collegiate debut in the event, taking home a second-place finish with her time of 12:18.57.
Sophomore Skyler Guillot set a new personal record in the javelin throw and finished first. Her throw went a distance of 41.27m (135-0), surpassing her previous best of 40.16m, which she set earlier this season.
Tulane's women distance runners took control of the 5000m race, claiming three of the top-five finishes. Redshirt juniors Emma Newton and Lauren Bartels finished second and third, respectively, with the former setting a new personal best in the event with a time of 17:23.45.
Freshman Bridgid Selfors rounded out the top five, finishing fifth with a personal-best time of 17:57.40. Selfors' time is a six-second improvement from her previous personal record while Newton's time surpasses her old top time by one second.
On the men's side, freshman James Watson finished second in the javelin throw with a mark of 52.08m (191-02). Watson's mark is a personal best, besting his previous top mark of 49.59m.
Freshman Stephen Medlin grabbed a third-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase. Running in the event for the second time this season, Medlin posted a time of 10:10.49 - an improvement from his first effort in the event, in which he finished with a time of 10:39.82.
UP NEXT
The action from California rolls on tomorrow. Saturday's competition starts at 12 p.m. with competitions in four field events. Action on the track starts at 3:30 p.m., beginning with the 4x100m relay.
