Constantin Schmitz Captures Third American Athletic Conference Player of the Week Honor
Apr 3, 2018 | Men's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS - For the second week in a row and third time this season, Tulane men's tennis senior Constantin Schmitz has been named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week according to an announcement by the league office Tuesday afternoon.
The recognition marks the fourth time this spring a Green Wave player has received the honor, as Schmitz was also tabbed on Jan. 23 and March 27, sandwiching sophomore Ewan Moore's nod on Feb. 27. The weekly award is the ninth of Schmitz's career, as he received the honor five times during his junior campaign in 2017 and once as a freshman in 2015.
A Remagen, Germany native, Schmitz went undefeated in doubles and singles last week, leading Tulane to a pair of shutout road wins at SMU and 15th-ranked Texas. He earned his 10th win of the season over a ranked singles opponent while extending his unbeaten streak to seven straight individually and six in a row in doubles matches.
Teamed with Moore at the No. 1 position in the doubles lineup, Schmitz combined to upset the nation's 4th-ranked doubles team of Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer, 7-6(5), from Texas to clinch the doubles point. Ranked 19th nationally in singles, he defeated 60th-ranked Yuya Ito, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, from the No. 1 spot to clinch the team match in a 4-0 upset victory over the Longhorns on Thursday night in Austin.
Just two days prior, his No. 1 singles contest against SMU's Tomas Vaise went unfinished at the time the overall match was clinched despite holding a 6-3, 5-1 lead. Schmitz and Moore earned a 6-4 victory atop Tulane's doubles lineup to clinch the first team point of the match, helping the Wave to a 4-0 win over the Mustangs in Dallas.
Ranked No. 26 nationally the latest ITA team poll, Tulane hosts its final two regular season matches this coming weekend, beginning Saturday, April 7 at noon against Rice. The Green Wave will then host conference foe USF at 1 p.m., for Senior Day on Sunday afternoon.
