
No. 26/21 Men's Tennis Hosts Rice, USF in Final Weekend of Regular Season

NEW ORLEANS - Winners in seven of its last eight matches, the No. 26/21 Tulane men's tennis team closes out the regular season with a pair of home matches, beginning Saturday, April 7 against Rice at noon, before taking on American Athletic Conference rival USF on Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played at the City Park Pepsi Tennis Center.
SENIOR CEREMONY
Fans should arrive early for Sunday's 1 p.m., match, as Tulane will recognize its lone senior, Constantin Schmitz, with a pre-match ceremony.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane (13-6) scored its most impressive win of the season with a 4-0 shutout at 15th-ranked Texas last Thursday. The Green Wave claimed the doubles point despite two of the three matches going into 6-6 tiebreakers, before claiming the first set on four of six singles courts. After falling to the Longhorns in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, Tulane was led by senior Constantin Schmitz's three-set victory over No. 60 Yuya Ito at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, after he and sophomore Ewan Moore clinched the doubles point with an impressive 7-6(5) doubles win over fourth-ranked Leonardo Telles and Rodrigo Banzer.
SCOUTING RICE
The Owls (9-14) enter Saturday's matchup with wins in three of their last four contests, including a 4-1 conference road win at UTSA last Saturday. Eric Rutledge leads the team with a 19-10 overall record, including a 12-4 mark this spring with 11 of those wins coming at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. In doubles, Rutledge and Sumit Sarkar hold a 7-3 ledger with all of their decisions coming from the No. 1 position.
The Green Wave has won two of their last three meetings with the Owls, including a 4-1 home win last season. As former Conference USA foes, the Wave and Owls have split each of the last six matchups, while Tulane is 3-0 at home during that span.
SCOUTING USF
Winners of every American Athletic Conference championship since the inaugural year of the league in 2013-14, the Bulls (7-13) will play at 17th-ranked Memphis on Friday afternoon before arriving in New Orleans. Despite dropping four of its last five matches, USF has played a difficult schedule against the likes of numerous nationally-ranked teams, including No. 7, Mississippi State, No. 9 Florida, No. 10 TCU, No. 16 Oklahoma, No. 17 Memphis, No. 19 Baylor (twice), No. 28 Harvard and No. 49 Loyola-Marymount. Alberto Barroso-Camp leads the team with a 10-4 singles record this spring, including a 7-1 mark playing out of the No. 1 spot.
Tulane has dropped four straight matchups against the Bulls since becoming conference rivals during the spring of 2015, which includes a 5-2 defeat in Tampa, Fla., last spring.
IN THE RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA team rankings, Tulane ranks No. 26 nationally, which is currently the second highest of any American Athletic Conference program behind Memphis at No. 17. The Green Wave's highest ranking this season was No. 20, matching their 2017 high, which is also the highest under head coach Mark Booras' leadership.
The Wave has two players listed in the singles poll aConstantin Schmitzms ranked. Senior and 2017 All-America choice Constantin Schmitz holds the Wave's highest singles ranking at No. 11, followed by sophomore Ewan Moore at No. 87. Schmitz and Moore also comprise the nation's No. 54 doubles tandem.
In the USTA College Tennis Poll released on April 4, the Wave maintained moved up three spots to No. 21.
DOUBLES POINT DICTATION
The doubles point is coveted by most teams in dual matches and it has been very indicative of Tulane's success this spring. The Green Wave are 11-0 when winning two of three doubles matches, but just 2-6 when they do not. The Wave's only victories without the doubles point include a pair of 5-2 road wins at Middle Tennessee on March 2 and Auburn on MarchConstantin Schmitz>CONFERENCE PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Constantin Schmitz has been named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week three times during the 2018 spring season, the first on Jan. 23 followed by back-to-back selections on March 27 and April 3. Schmitz now has eight weekly nods for his career as he received the honor five times last season in addition to the being named the league's player of the month in October of 2016.
Ewan Moore was chosen as the American Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week on Feb. 27, after posting a 2-0 mark at No. 2 singles and 1-0 at No.1 doubles for the Green Wave, including a straight set victory over the nation's No. 20 player, Giovanni Oradini of 39th-ranked Mississippi State, 6-4, 6-4, on Friday evening. He followed up that performance by outlasting Connor Curry, 7-6(4), 6-4, as part of a 7-0 Tulane rout of 21st-ranked Texas Tech just two days later.
ONE TOUGH SLATE
Tulane increased the intensity of its 2018 spring schedule and will face 10 teams that reached the NCAA Tournament last season. In addition to American Athletic Conference foes USF, Memphis and SMU, the Green Wave will do battle with California, Mississippi State, Oklahoma State, Rice, TCU, Texas, and Stanford.
RAISING THE BAR
The Green Wave won 19 dual matches during the 2017 season, the most for the program in the post-Katrina era. The previous best was 16, set in 2016.
