The American's Recap | Championship Central | Results from Day Two
CINCINNATI – Juniors Jessica Duckett and Mckenzie Melius shattered their own school records in the 100m hurdles and 3000m steeplechase, respectively, and Tulane track and field placed three athletes on the podium in day two of The American Outdoor Championships on Saturday inside Gettler Stadium. The Green Wave women are in fifth place with 26.50 points while the men sit in eighth with eight points entering the final day of competition.
QUOTES
"I'm very pleased that we followed up the strong first day of performance that we had with an even stronger day two of performances across the board. The positive signs that we're seeing team-wide in everybody's growth and development is exciting for all of us. We had three athletes make the podium today, and that's always great to see in finals. Our women hurdlers and sprinters are really sharp right now and performing well, and I have high hopes that they will finish the meet off as well as they have done to this point in time. I'm really proud of the way the whole team is performing right now, and I'm very much looking forward to the opportunities we have tomorrow to compete at our best."
"Pauline is a perfectionist. She's really hard on herself, but she's also easy to redirect and try to get focused on the next event. Her performance today is a sign of somebody that really has potential in the heptathlon. We knew that with where she was sitting yesterday, if she came out and did the things she was capable of doing, that she'd have a chance to move [up the leaderboard]. She was consistent in the long jump, did well in the javelin and won the 800m. That's her strength and it paid off.
"The men's 3000m steeplechase was a great race. It was a slow pace thru 2000m, and the race really heated up with two laps to go. The two of them - [Houston's Brian] Barraza and Emmanuel - are the top of the class in that field. Emmanuel did a really good job of allowing other athletes to dictate the early pace and set it up in a way where he'd be pushed to a maximum level. Brian just got the best of him coming off the final barrier and was able to break away a little, but I was encouraged that Emmanuel kept it close. I think there's going to be some exciting matches if they get the chance to compete against each other again.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Junior Jessica Duckett delivered a performance for the ages in the 100m hurdles prelim, winning with a school record-breaking time of 13.14 (+0.2 m/s) and qualifying for tomorrow's final. With the time, she topped the previous school record of 13.23, which she set at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season.
She also set a new American Athletic Conference event record with her time and posted the fastest time ever recorded in Cincinnati's Gettler Stadium's history. Her mark is the 19th-best time in the NCAA East Region, as of Saturday night.
Junior Mckenzie Melius made history of her own, as well, on Saturday, resetting the 3000m steeplechase school record. Her time of 10:33.15 bested the previous top time of 10:34.20, which she had recorded at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season.
Melius claimed a third-place finish with her effort, earning a bronze medal and representing one of the three Tulane athletes who stood on the podium in day two of the conference championships. Junior Rebekah Markel earned the silver medal in the women's pole vault with her mark of 4.11m, and junior Emmanuel Rotich took the silver in the men's 3000m steeplechase.
Markel tied her personal-best mark in the pole vault, clearing 4.11m, but was unable to get over 4.21m. She is currently 20th in the NCAA East region.
Rotich competed in what was the most compelling event of Saturday, battling Houston's Brian Barraza to the very end in the 3000m steeplechase. The two athletes finished the race in a dead sprint, with Rotich coming in behind Barraza at 8:49.01 to earn the silver.
Rotich, however, still holds the top 3000m steeplechase time in the NCAA East Region with his time of 8:40.66 - set one weekend ago at the Payton Jordan Invitational in Stanford, California.
Elsewhere on the track, sophomore Maya Harewood set a new personal record by .01 seconds in the women's 400m dash, finishing first in her prelim heat and second overall. She qualified for tomorrow's final with her performance.
Sophomore Brandi Hughes and freshman Kyah Loyd both for tomorrow's womens 100m hurdles final along with Duckett. Hughes finished third in 13.54 (+0.7 m/s) while Loyd came across the line fourth with a time of 13.65 (+0.2 m/s) - a new personal record.
Junior Emma Newton earned a spot in tomorrow's women's 1500m finals with a 12th-place finish (4:42.93) in the prelim, as did freshman Patrick Dougherty on the men's side. He finished 12th with a time of 3:58.92 - a new personal record.
Sophomore Raymond Kibet cruised to a men's 400m final qualification with a fifth-place finish in the prelim. Kibet, who came across the line in 47.37, holds The American record in the event with a time of 45.84, and his current personal best in the event is 45.21, ranking 23rd in the NCAA East Region.
Wrapping up the heptathlon, freshman Pauline Helm competed in the long jump, javelin throw and 800m run to close out the seven-part event. A third-place finish in the long jump and a first-place finish in the 800m catapulted her to a sixth-place overall finish (4,662 points).
Helm started her day in the heptathlon long jump, notching a mark of 5.50m to claim a third-place finish and 700 points. She followed that up with a new personal record-setting performance in the heptathlon javelin throw, where she recorded a mark of 29.79m.
Helm's biggest moment came in the 800m run. Making her outdoor collegiate debut in the event, she won the race with a time of 2:25.43 – more than a second ahead of the second-place finisher – and earned 751 points, finishing the competition in impressive fashion.
