TAMPA, Fla. - The sky was angry on Saturday, as rain poured down throughout the morning and afternoon, soaking the athletes competing in the final day at the NCAA East Preliminary Round inside USF Track & Field Stadium.
Senior Jacqueline Esmay and junior Jessica Duckett were undeterred, however, and closed out the Green Wave's week at regionals with performances in the women's hammer throw and women's 100m hurdles, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Duckett ran in the quarterfinals of the 100m hurdles, looking to secure a second qualifying bid to the national championships. After recording an eighth-place finish with time of 13.12 (+2.1 m/s) in Friday's first round to advance, she placed 19th with a time of 13.72 (-.1 m/s), missing out on an opportunity to qualify in two events at the championships.
Duckett will run in the 400m hurdles at the championships after qualifying yesterday with a new personal-best time of 57.30 in the event. She finished in 11th place in the quarterfinals and earned a spot at the championships for the second time in her career.
Before Duckett ran, senior Jacqueline Esmay competed in the hammer throw Saturday morning. Esmay recorded a mark of 55.56m (182-3) in her first attempt of the day, which proved to be her best throw of the event.
Esmay placed 11th in her flight and 40th overall, however, falling short of qualifying for the national championships.
UP NEXT
Duckett and junior Emmanuel Rotich are heading to Track Town, USA.
Duckett qualified in the 400m hurdles while Rotich has a spot in the 3000m steeplechase at the national championships, which are set for June 6-9 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
