NEW ORLEANS – It all comes down to this.
Tulane track athletes Emmanuel Rotich and Jessica Duckett will be racing for national championships in Eugene, Oregon, this week at the NCAA Outdoor Championship. For both, 2018 marks a return appearance to the national championship meet as they competed in Oregon in 2017.
For the sixth consecutive season, the meet will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field. The championship meet will be broadcast live through ESPN3.
ABOUT THE MEET
Rotich will be competing first, running in the 3K steeplechase semifinals on Wednesday at 7:02 p.m. central. If he finishes in the top five of his heat or among the next two fastest runners in both heats, Rotich will qualify for the event final on Friday at 7:54 p.m. central.
Rotich has the fastest personal best among all 12 athletes in his heat and the fourth-fastest season best.
Duckett, meanwhile, starts her time in Oregon on Thursday at 8 p.m. central with the 400-meter hurdle semifinals. If she is among the top two in her heat or the next two fastest runners among all three heats, she will advance to the national final on Saturday at 6:57 p.m. central.
Duckett will run in the second heat Thursday and has the sixth-fastest personal best and season best among the eight runners in her heat.
HOW THEY GOT THERE
Rotich qualified for the national championship meet in style, winning the 3K steeplechase at the NCAA East Regional in Tampa, Florida, two weeks ago. Rotich put in a time of 8:43.05 in the race to edge out the second-place finisher by half a second.
At last year's national championship, he placed third in the 3K steeplechase semifinal (8:42.30) and then went on to earn Second Team All-American status with a ninth-place showing in the national final (8:40.64). Last year in Oregon, Rotich also ran in the 5K national final.
Duckett also had a very strong showing at the NCAA East Regional in Tampa, earning her spot in the 400 hurdles with a time of 57.30 seconds, a new personal best. A day earlier in the prelims, she set a new personal best of 57.30.
Last year, Duckett raced to a 12th-place showing in the national semifinal with a time of 58.47 to be named a Second Team All-American.
