Hosting Conference Championship Highlights Cross Country's 2018 Schedule
Aug 15, 2018 | Cross Country
Full Schedule
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane cross country fans will have the chance to watch their team compete for a league title at home this season, as the Green Wave will host the 2018 American Athletic Conference championship race at Audubon Park in October.
That meet highlights Tulane's cross country schedule that was announced by Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Eric Peterson on Wednesday.
"Hosting the AAC Championship will be a great experience," Peterson said. "Our athletes will have the chance to compete for a championship in an environment and on a course that we are most familiar with. This should be an advantage for our teams and something we are very much looking forward to.
"The cross country season is upon us, and I know everyone is excited to reunite and start up again. This schedule will allow us to compete locally early on and then finish the regular season with two outstanding and high-powered meets. All of these meets will test our athletes at a high level and prepare them for the postseason."
Before the cross country teams can get to late October for the conference championship, it will compete in four regular-season meets with two in Louisiana.
The year begins on September 1 in Mathews, Louisiana at the Nichols Cross Country Invitational hosted by the Colonels. The teams will then head to the LSU Invitational in Baton Rouge two weeks later on September 15. This marks the third consecutive season Tulane participates in the LSU Invitational, and the Green Wave women won the meet last season.
The first big trip of the year will be on September 22 to College Station, Texas, for the Texas A&M Invitational. The Green Wave will get a great chance to get used to the Aggies' home turf, as Texas A&M will also be hosting the South Central Regional in November.
Tulane goes even farther when the calendar rolls over to October, heading north to Badger County to take part in the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals. The meet boasts some of the nation's top teams and will be a tough test for Tulane two weeks before the postseason begins.
After returning home from Wisconsin, Tulane hosts The American Championship at Audubon Park on October 25. The race will feature a 6K course for the women and an 8K course for the men. This will be Tulane's first time ever hosting a conference cross country championship and its first time hosting a league championship in any sport since the 2012 Conference USA Outdoor Championship.
Following the conference championship, Tulane will head back to Texas A&M to vie for a South Central Regional Championship. At last year's meet – also in College Station – Emmanuel Rotich claimed first place. He'll be looking to defend his title in 2018.
Finally, the season will end in Madison, Wisconsin, with the NCAA Championship. Like the Pre-Nationals, the University of Wisconsin will host the national championship races.
