Tulane Sailing Head Coach Selected as International Collegiate Cup Head Coach
Aug 21, 2018 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane sailing head coach Charles Higgins has been selected to serve as the head coach at this year's LaserPerformance Collegiate Cup (LPCC).
The annual event, dedicated to introducing and teaching team racing to university-aged students throughout the world, will be held in Torbole, Italy, from August 27 to September 2.
"It's exciting, the area is really beautiful and well-known for sailing because the conditions are almost like clockwork," Higgins said. "You know when the wind is going to come in each day and in what direction, and even the wind speed. It's kind of on a sailor's bucket list to get there and sail at some point in your career."
Higgins attended the LPCC last year as well, serving as a program team leader, and was asked to return this year as the head coach for the entire event, instructing teams from all over the world.
In discussing what he will experience during his time in Italy and bring back to his team at Tulane, Higgins said that he is really looking forward to learning how to communicate with a language barrier.
"Learning how to communicate with people who don't speak the same primary language as you is going to be helpful because sailing is a really difficult sport to coach with communication because you're never in the same boat with them," he said. "You're always farther away, so finding a way to communicate in any language that doesn't involve yelling is always important."
During his time coaching in Italy, Higgins will be writing a blog about his day-to-day activities and insights that will be featured on TulaneGreenWave.com. Be sure to check out his posts to follow along with him on this international experience.Â
