Rotich Named American Athletic Conference Runner of the Week
Sep 25, 2018 | Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane senior Emmanuel Rotich was named the American Athletic Conference's Runner of the Week on Tuesday afternoon, earning the honor for the fifth time in his career.
Rotich owed that performance to his victory at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday. Competing against other members of the South Central Region, Rotich ran the third-fastest 8K time in school history when he crossed the finish line in 23:43.3 for a first-place effort. He won the race by more than eight seconds over the second-place finisher and was one of just two runners to break the 24-minute mark.
The race was Rotich's first of the season and came on the same course where teams will contest for this year's South Central Regional title. Rotich is the defending South Central Regional champion.
Rotich's performance also helped Tulane to a sixth-place finish and kept the Green Wave men in the No. 13 ranking in the South Central Region this week.
Rotich had previously won the conference's Runner of the Week award four times, all in 2016. His five Runner of the Week awards now place him second all-time in school history for most weekly cross country honors behind Amos Kipyegon who won Conference USA weekly awards 10 times in his career.
The Green Wave cross country teams now have their longest stretch without competition during the year, as they will wrap up the regular season on October 13 at the Pre-National Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin. Tulane will then host the American Athletic Conference Championship on October 25 at Audubon Park.
