Sailing Off to Strong Start, Stands in Third in Coed Showcase Tournament
Oct 19, 2019 | Sailing
NEWPORT, Rhode Island – Tulane sailing posted an impressive performance in the team's first day of racing on Saturday in the Coed East Coast Showcase Tournament, currently standing in third among 17 teams.
"The Green Wave had a strong day today," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The team adapted well to sailing in boats that are a bit different from ours, and came out swinging. A couple big mistakes as the day went on dropped us back a little bit. Fortunately those mistakes are quite fixable and I'm glad we learned and bounced back after each one. While happy with where we sit in the standings, we are far from satisfied and are eager to bet back after it tomorrow."
The Green Wave totaled 15 top 10 finishes, adding three wins, to record 123 points after 10 races.
The A Division boat, sailed by skipper Cameron Giblin alongside crews Caroline Benson and Quinn Keenan, got off to a great start with first-place finishes in the first two races of the day, before adding a third win in race number six.
The group finished every race but one in the top 10 of the pack, standing in third after one day of action with 57 points.
Skipper Asher Zittrer and crews Grace Siwicki and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan sailed the B Division races, recording two second-place and one third-place finish to highlight scores from day one. The three stand in fifth with 66 total points heading into day two.
Rhode Island leads the regatta with 96 total points, followed by Jacksonville with 116.
The Olive and Blue are set to head back on the water on Sunday, sailing the remaining eight races to close out competition in New England.
