ST. MARY'S, Maryland – The Tulane sailing team totaled ten top 10 finishes on the first day of the Coed Showcase Semifinal Regatta, with a win in the second race on Saturday highlighting the team's performance.
"Today was by far the toughest competition we have faced all year, and we're right in the thick of it. Cameron [Giblin], Katie [Cartiglia], and Quinn [Keenan] had a very strong performance today," head coach Charles Higgins said. "Ciara [Rodriguez-Horan], Grace [Siwicki], and Stephen [Hahn] had to battle all day in their division and did a good job hanging tough and staying close to the lead group. Today was tough, but we are very much in contention to finish in the top nine, which is the primary goal for the weekend. We'll get some good rest tonight and aim to move up the leader board tomorrow. The team is definitely hungry and I'm confident we can make some moves."
The Green Wave's A Division boat – with skipper Cameron Giblin and crews Katie Cartiglia and Quinn Keenan – stands in fifth after 10 races. Recording first, second and third place finishes, the team earned 74 points and is tied with Boston University and just short of catching Stanford with 67.
Skipper Ciara Rodriguez-Horan, alongside crews Grace Siwicki and Stephen Hahn, stand in 13th in the B Division boat, totaling 118 points. The trio's best race of the day was a fifth-place finish in the ninth, also notching a sixth-place finish in race number three.
Tulane checks in at 11th overall after one day of action, totaling 192 points. The team is currently ahead of Kings Point (213), Jacksonville (224), Christopher Newport (226), New York Maritime (250), Old Dominion (256), Eckerd (259) and Northeastern (271).
Coast Guard leads the regatta with 120 points, followed by Harvard with 121 and Boston University with 130.
The Olive and Blue are set to sail the remaining eight races Sunday, with the top nine teams moving on to the Coed Showcase Finals on Oct. 19 and 20 at Connecticut College.
