Sailing Finishes Day One of Nelson Roltsch Team Race
Feb 16, 2019 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane sailing team stands in sixth place after day one on the water in the Nelson Roltsch Team Race, earning wins over Miami University and the University of Texas.
"The wind was light all day but we managed to get 75 percent of the opening round completed," head coach Charles Higgins said. "The team had a hard time keeping pace with the top teams in the early races where the simplest mistakes could be very costly."
The Green Wave fell to No. 7. College of Charleston, Jacksonville University, Texas A&M Galveston and University of California Santa Barbara in the remaining four races on the low-wind day on Lake Pontchartrain.
Sophomore Caelan Watts, senior Harris Cram, freshman Grace Siwicki and freshman Ciara Rodriguez-Horan served as the skippers for the day, teaming up with sophomore Kate Lenhard, senior Sophie Ricker and senior Grace Bloomfield, respectively, in the crew spots.
Tulane will be back in action tomorrow for day two of the Nelson Roltsch Regatta at 10 a.m., continuing with the team racing style for the remaining nine races, weather depending.
"Tomorrow we'll be back at it and hope to improve on what we've learned. We have a young team," Higgins added. "With time and experience, we will definitely get better."
