NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane University women's golf team opened competition Sunday at the 2019 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship. The Green Wave finished the day with a team score of 306 and are currently in 15th-place.
Â
Junior Haydyn Gibson and junior Gabrielle Correia lead all Tulane individuals after they carded opening scores of two over par, 74 and are tied for 23rd. Sophomore Jennifer Rosenberg turned in a round of 75 and is tied for 33rd.
Â
"We had some really nice performances today from Haydyn, Jenny and Gabby and I know the rest of our team is capable of putting up some great scores in round two," head coach Lorne Don said.
Â
Correia, who is competing as an individual led the team with four birdies. The New York native's opening round 74 is tied for her third lowest round of the year and is four strokes below her season average.
Â
Rounding out the Green Wave lineup was senior Laura Munoz (tied for 69th, 78), freshman Isabella Cardenas (tied for 74th, 79) and senior Sofia Goicoechea (tied for 83rd, 81).
Â
The Green Wave enter round two 11 strokes outside of the field's top five overall. This year's field features 15 of the nation's top 50 teams, including the top four teams in the country headlined by USC (No. 1), Texas (No. 2), Florida (No. 3) and Duke (No. 4).
Â
Day one competition featured strong winds throughout the day, which made the par 72, 6,239-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club a challenging course for each of the 93 players and 18 teams in this year's field. Texas and Duke were the only teams that shot under par during round one play.Â
Â
Texas leads all teams after it shot an opening round score of 285. Duke's Ana Belac leads all individuals after she carded an opening round score of four-under-par 68.
