INDIANAPOLIS– The Tulane University swimming and diving team opened day one competition at the American Athletic Championships on a high note as it posted top three finishes in a pair of relay events on Wednesday at the Indiana University Natatorium.Â
Â
The Green Wave began the swimming events by timing a school record in the 800 freestyle relay. Tulane's relay team of freshman Samy Morton, sophomore Courtney Barker, freshman Iza Pelka and senior Shelly Zelnick posted a runner-up performance and recorded a time of 7:15.82.Â
Â
"I'm very excited for the team," head coach Leah Stancil said. "The girls did really well and they raced tough. The whole plan throughout the entire season has been to race tough, to be aggressive and to believe in yourself and they are doing a great job in doing those three things. I think we have the ball rolling and we hope to keep it going. "Â
Â
Tulane's school-record performance surpassed the previous school record by two seconds. The previous school record had stood since Feb. 18, 2017.Â
Â
The Green Wave continued their success into the 200 medley relay by finishing third in a time of 1:40.59. Senior Paris Zhang, sophomore Kate McDonald, senior Lena Hayakawa and senior Lilly Morgan teamed up to post the third fastest time in school history.Â
Â
"The team is very confident right now and they are very excited to swim," Stancil said. "Tonight's performance really helped us prepare for tomorrow."
Â
Freshman Sierra Shurts led the way for the Green Wave in the one-meter dive as she finished 14th, posting a score of 227.75.Â
Â
Through five events, Tulane sits in fifth place with 68 points. The Green Wave returns to action tomorrow morning with swimming preliminaries at 9 a.m.
Â
The American Digital Network will stream the entire meet with live coverage featured on its Facebook Digital Plus page. Brenden Gulick and Joel Elber will have the call.Â
