CHAMPIONSHIPS CENTRAL | DAY TWO RESULTS | WATCH DAY THREE COMPETITION LIVE
INDIANAPOLIS – The Tulane University swimming and diving team continued its strong performances during day two competition at the American Athletic Conference Championships as it posted top three finishes in three events on Thursday at the Indiana University Natatorium.
Â
Tulane has had three relay teams and two individuals reach the medal stand and has set three school records through two days of competition.
Â
"The team is doing really well," head coach Leah Stancil said. "We're trying to take everything day-by-day and event-by-event and I'm hoping for even more success tomorrow."
Â
Junior Olivia Johnson got the evening started on a high note for the Green Wave as she broke her own school record in the 500 freestyle and earned a NCAA B-cut time en route to a runner-up finish.
Â
Johnson set the school standard for the second time on the day as she posted a performance of 4:47.18 in the finals. Earlier in the day, Johnson clocked a time of 4:48.46 in the preliminary race, which bested her previous school record time that she posted back on Nov. 18 at the Phill Hansel Invitational.
Â
"Olivia's race was great," Stancil said. "She swam it almost perfectly. It was her best time ever and it broke the school record. It is really great to see all her work pay off."
Â
Senior Shelly Zelnick followed a similar path as Johnson as she broke a school record twice. Zelnick broke the school in her 200 IM preliminary race, clocking a time of 2:00.02. She then followed that performance with a time of 1:59.34 in the finals to earn a runner-up finish. Zelnick's time also hit the NCAA B Cut standard.
Â
Sophomore Kate McDonald also earned a NCAA B Cut time in the 200 IM, as she clocked a performance of 1:59.79 and finished fifth overall.
Â
Tulane concluded finals competition on a high note as its 200 freestyle relay team took third. Freshman Judith Desforges, senior Paris Zhang, Zelnick, and senior Lilly Morgan teamed up for a time of 1:32.23.
Â
Through 14 events, Tulane sits in fifth place with 170 points. The Green Wave returns to action tomorrow morning with swimming preliminaries at 9 a.m.
Â
"I think the key for us tomorrow is to stay relaxed," Stancil said. "They all want to do well so badly and sometimes that can take away from a performance of opposed to helping it because they get so nervous because they are so excited, so I'm hoping that they just relax and have fun out there."
Â
The American Digital Network will stream the entire meet with live coverage featured on its Facebook Digital Plus page. Brenden Gulick and Joel Elber will have the call.Â
