Mar 2, 2019 | Women's Tennis
NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane women's tennis team heads to Tampa, Fla., for matches on back-to-back days, beginning with an American Athletic Conference road match at USF, followed by a neutral site contest against Pennsylvania.
The Green Wave (5-7) will play at USF on Sunday, March 3 at 11 a.m. (CT), before staying in town to face UPenn on Monday at the same start time.
SCOUTING USF
The Bulls (5-6) enters Sunday's match with losses in three of their last four matches, including a 4-1 home defeat against Oklahoma in their most recent bout last Sunday. USF is led by one ranked singles player, No. 44 Ana Roman Dominguez, who owns an 8-1 mark playing at the No. 1 position in the lineup. The Bulls share one common opponent with Green Wave as they dropped a 6-1 contest at home earlier this season.
SCOUTING UPENN
The Quakers (6-2) enter Monday's match with wins in two of their last three but are coming off a 4-2 road defeat at No. 19 Old Dominion last Sunday. UPenn possesses one ranked singles player, No. 97 Iuliia Bryzgalova, who holds a 13-2 overall record, including a 7-0 mark this spring.
LAST TIME OUT
Tulane earned a 4-1 road win at UAB last Sunday, as the Blazers were forced to compete with just four healthy players. The Green Wave cruised to notching the doubles point, before Daniela La Fuente clinched with a straight-set win at No. 3 singles.
IN THE ITA RANKINGS
In the latest Oracle/ITA national rankings released on February 20, the doubles duo of Ivone Alvaro and Elena Muller were listed at No. 25 nationally. It marks the first time a doubles tandem has been ranked in the poll under second-year head coach Maria Brito.
THE DOUBLES POINT
Tulane has won the doubles point in seven of 12 matches this season. The Green Wave's lone victory while not securing the point came in the season opener against Northwestern State, where Tulane walked away with a 4-3 victory.
5-STAR SIGNEES
Head coach Maria Brito and assistant coach Keri Wong have left their imprints on the recruiting trail since their arrival, and their efforts paid off in a big way in November during the NCAA Early Signing Period. The Green Wave reeled in two 5-star recruits according to tennisrecruiting.net with the additions of Lahari Yelamanchili and Mackenzie Clark.
Yelamanchili is the No. 1 ranked player in Illinois and the No. 50 overall player in the class of 2019, while Clark is a Morristown, N.J. native who trains in College Park, Md., ranking No. 3 in the state and No. 77 nationally.
