SAN DIEGO – The Tulane men's tennis team began its journey at the San Diego Invitational on a positive note, recording its third consecutive win with a 4-2 victory over Drake on Friday afternoon on the campus of San Diegio State University.
Ranked 49th nationally, the Green Wave (7-10) got the day started in a similar fashion to its previous two matches by securing the first team point of the match with a pair of doubles victories. Dane Esses and Luis Erlenbusch defeated Tom Hands and Calum MacGeoch, 6-2, on court three, before Akos Kotorman and Hamish Stewart took down Vinny Gillespie and Ben Clark, 6-4, on court two.
Tulane extended its advantage over Drake (14-10) with a pair of straight-set victories in singles, as Tyler Schick topped Barny Thorold, 6-0, 6-3, at the No. 4 spot, ahead of No. 96 Erlenbusch's 6-1, 6-2, victory over Bayo Phillips at No. 3.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a straight-set win from the No. 5 spot in the lineup, but 64th-ranked Ewan Moore was able to clinch just a short while later, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 to preserve the Wave's win.
Tulane will face the winner of No. 36 Harvard and San Diego State in Saturday's semifinals.
